08/10/2004: "The Bush Pastry-Based Weight Loss Approach to the Envoronment"
The predisposition of Bush administration to economic approaches contradicts the long-term perspective fundamental to environmentalism. There is always a short-term economic benefit to raping the environment. Long term economic considerations will always be trumped by the quick wealth to be made by ignoring issues of long-term sustainability. The “market-based environmentalism” espoused by Right Wingers is thus an oxymoron. Such a policy must lead to environmental degradation because raping the land invariably improves quality of life in the short run. Environmental disasters, typically taking a bit of time to stew, are not a short-term issue. As an oxymoronic phrase, “market-based environmental policy” is right up there with “pastry-based weight loss plan.” Note how this analogy applies equally to Bush economic policy, particularly deficit reduction. The way Bush and his cronies play the game, current generations always win and future generations – our children and grandchildren – always lose. The one consistent characteristic of right wing extremists is that they have no regard for the prospects of posterity. It is thus a no brainer from their perspective that they play a game where the immoral player always wins. It’s also why they hate government interference with their fun. And since we’re talking about fun, shall we play a game? Tomorrow let’s play Win-Win, the game show where a win-win on the environment is always a possibility!
